Ending armed violence for peace and development

The Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development (GD) is an initiative that supports states and civil society actors to achieve measurable reductions in the global burden of armed violence by 2015 and beyond.

Regular Review Conferences provide opportunities to assess progress in the process and implementation of the GD, to highlight the armed violence reduction and prevention agenda, and to build political momentum behind the core objectives of the GD. Ministerial Review Conferences were held in Geneva in 2008 and in 2011.

Objectives

The UN General Assembly will decide upon a new development framework in 2015, to follow on from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The nature of the GD’s future direction depends largely on the composition of this new development framework. For this reason, during 2014, a series of Regional Review Conferences (RRCs) will be held to not only review the implementation process of the GD in different regional contexts and s**trengthen the engagement of the signatory states to the GD**, but to also gather support for the meaningful integration ofarmed violence reduction in national and international development processes, including the post-2015 development agenda.

Locations

These Regional Review Conferences will be held in five different regions. Each will be co-hosted by a Core Group Member from the relevant region, in partnership with the Government of with Switzerland andUnited Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Participants

Each Regional Review Conference regional meeting will involve around 100 participants working on the prevention and reduction of armed violence in the region. These participants will represent national governments, local authorities, civil society organizations, international and regional organizations, and the private sector.

Participation is by invitation only. Nevertheless interested stakeholders are welcome to contact the GD Secretariat. For civil society, interested organizations are invited to send a “Call for Expression of Interest”. Selection will be jointly organized with the Global Alliance on Armed Violence (GAAV).

A limited sponsorship programme, administered by UNDP, will encourage the participation of government representatives from low-income states and selected civil society organizations.
